Top BJP and Congress leaders, including UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, are among the key candidates as 51 constituencies across seven states vote today in the fifth phase of national elections.
Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal are the key states polling today. In Uttar Pradesh, Amethi, Raebaerily and Lucknow are the key constituencies to look out. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has been challenged by Union Minister Smriti Irani for the second time in Amethi, and in Lucknow, Union Minister Rajnath Singh is seeking reelection. The SP-BSP-RLD alliance has chosen Poonam Saxena, wife of actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha as its candidate against Rajnath Singh. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is again contesting from Raebareily, BJP has fielded ex-Congressman Dinesh Singh Tripathi against her.
Pulwama, where 40 soldiers died when their convoy was attacked, is also voting today in the third phase of polling for Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag constituency.

Jharkhand Man Carries 105-Year-Old Mother To Polling Booth
A man arrived with his 105-year-old mother to vote at polling booth number 450 in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh, news agency ANI reported. Jharkhand is among the seven states polling today.
Phase 5 Election: Voters In Madhya Pradesh Village Boycott Polling
Voters in a village in Betul, a district in Madhya Pradesh, have boycotted voting. People in Newralondu said they are upset of water shortage.
A grenade attack has been reported in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama. This is the first such this election season, no casualties have been reported.
Phase 5 Voting: “Attacked By Trinamool Goons,” Alleges BJP’s Arjun Singh
Arjun Singh, BJP candidate from Barrackpore in Bengal, has alleged that he was attacked by TMC workers. “I was attacked by goons from the Trinamool Congress party who have been brought from outside. Those people were scaring away our voters. I have been injured.”
Arjun Singh was formerly with the ruling Trinamool Congress. He left the party in March. He is contesting against Trinamool candidate and former railway minister Dinesh Trivedi.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati voted at a polling booth in UP’s
Lucknow this morning. She appealed to the people to “use their voting rights wisely”. “Every voter should use his voting right wisely. Everybody should get out of their homes to cast their votes,” she said.
EVM Malfunction Reported In Amethi, Raebareily
In UP’s Amethi, polling could not begin on time this morning due to EVM malfunction at election booth in Tiloi. EVM malfuction at a polling booth in Raebareily’s Sikandpur also disrupted the voting process.

Samajwadi Chief Akhilesh Yadav Tweets Appeal To Voters
“Today is the fifth phase of voting. I appeal to every citizen to come out and play the role of “panch parmeshwar”. Let better sense prevail instead of taking emotional decision as you vote. (sic),” Samajwadi chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted.
Rajnath Singh Votes In Lucknow
Home Minister Rajnath Singh voted this morning at a polling booth in Lucknow, a seat that the BJP has held since 1991. On being asked if he will be elected again, he said: “I leave the decision to the voters…. BJP, however, will get full majority.”
Two Polling Booths Set On Fire In J&K’s Shopian
- Two polling booths in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian have been set on fire. Ladakh, Pulwama and Shopian are voting in the state today.
- Due to security concerns, polling staff had to be airlifted and taken to polling booths at Zainpora area of Shopian district.
- In February, 40 CRPF men were killed when a convoy was attacked. Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed the responsibility of the attack.
